The long-delayed redevelopment of Owen Roberts Airport on Grand Cayman is slated to begin in September.

The project is scheduled for completion in 2012, according to Charles Clifford, the Cayman Islands' minister of tourism.

Plans for the airport expansion were first announced in May 2005 under the previous administration. Financing issues delayed the construction startup.

The new facility will feature a main terminal three times the size of the current terminal, an expanded ticketing and check-in hall, new domestic and international arrival and departure halls, three more airport gates, and redesigned passenger dropoff and pickup areas.

Plans for a 2,000-foot extension to the main runway remain under discussion.
