The damage to the airport from Hurricane Irma was severe, so minister of tourism Mellissa Arrindell-Doncher cautioned in St. Maarten's Daily Herald that "even as we open our airport, we are still months away from restoring PJIA to its former glory."Although the airport is reopening, the minister said there will changes in terms of passenger movement and security within the terminal building to allow for repairs to continue."There might be some inconveniences here and there, but we ask for patience as we work to get back to 100%," she said.St. Maarten will have some hotel inventory available when the airport reopens.KLM said earlier this week that it would operate twice-weekly flights from Amsterdam with a stopover in Curacao beginning Oct. 29.
