Strikes wreak havoc on French aviation

Strikes by workers at France's oil refineries and airports threaten to disrupt airline operations in France on Tuesday, Oct. 19. Workers are protesting the government's plan to raise the retirement age.

France's civil aviation authority sent an advisory Friday night to airlines making short- and medium-haul flights to Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport to arrive with enough fuel to get home, the Associated Press reported.

And, the civil aviation authority said on Monday it was asking airlines to cut flights into French airports by up to 50% on Tuesday because of possible strikes by airport personnel. A strike by refueling staff already has affected operations at Charles de Gaulle on Monday.

Air France says it plans to operate all its long-haul flights on Tuesday, but some domestic and European flights may be canceled.

The strike has affected all of France's fuel-producing refineries. Workers have set up blockades at many fuel depots. Police on Friday forced three crucial fuel depots to reopen.

Also, French truckers have reportedly staged slowdowns on French highways.

Plus, nationwide strikes continue to affect train travel. French rail operator SNCF said half the high-speed TGV trains were running on Monday.
