The Transportation Security Administration on Wednesday decided not to go ahead with a plan to allow pocket knives on airplanes.

The decision followed protests from lawmakers, airlines and flight attendants.

TSA Administrator John Pistole had announced a plan on March 5 to let passengers carry knives with blades up to 2.36 inches, starting on April 25.

However, three days before implementing the policy change, the TSA decided to take more time examining it, in response to strong opposition.

The TSA also had intended to allow passengers to bring aboard sporting equipment such as hockey sticks, lacrosse sticks and ski poles, but those items will continue to be banned from the cabin.
