Aviation Taiwan’s China Airlines to join SkyTeam By Jerry Limone / September 15, 2010 Share 1 -- Taiwan flag carrier China Airlines will join SkyTeam, which will give the alliance three airlines in greater China. China Southern is already in the alliance and China Eastern is in the process of joining. Both China Eastern and China Airlines are expected to become full-fledged SkyTeam members by the middle of next year. SkyTeam Chairman Leo van Wijk said that Taipei, Taiwan’s capital city, will serve as an alternative Asian hub, with services to and from key business destinations in the region.SkyTeam envisions China Airlines’ network complementing those of Guangzhou-based China Southern and Shanghai-based China Eastern. China Airlines will bring four new destinations to the network: Okinawa and Miyazaki, Japan; Surabaya, Indonesia; and Palau. China Eastern will be SkyTeam’s fifth Asian carrier. Korean Air and Vietnam Airlines also are in the alliance.
