Travelport gets restraining order against AA

By Michael Fabey

A judge for the Circuit Court of Cook County in Illinois granted Travelport a temporary restraining order preventing American Airlines from removing its content from Orbitz.

The airline is barred from removing its ticketing and other information from the online travel agency until the judge rules on Travelport’s request for a preliminary injunction, according to the Nov. 19 order. The hearings for that request are scheduled for Dec. 2 and 3.

American told Orbitz earlier this month it plans to terminate its business with the online agency on Dec. 1. Travelport owns 48% of Orbitz through an affiliate, and the GDS company says such a move would breach the carrier’s agreement to provide full GDS content.

American also has gone to court, asking for a ruling to say it does have the legal right to terminate the Orbitz deal.

"Contrary to some thoughts, travel agents do exist ... We are usually able to get clients better prices, and we know we can see that clients have better experiences. And as our personal motto is: Our Service Travels With You."
