The U.S. airline trade association Airlines for America (A4A) is lobbying Congress for a national airline policy with several goals, including cutting the taxes airlines pay and changing regulations the airlines consider burdensome and expensive. It is also running a consumer campaign.
The five-point campaign proposes modernizing the air traffic control system. The airlines also say that they want a national air policy that will help them compete with foreign airlines that A4A says have more favorable tax and regulatory environments. The campaign also calls for stabilizing the cost of jet fuel and support for a comprehensive national energy policy.
The A4A is posting advertisements at Ronald Reagan National Airport during the holidays to publicize the campaign. It has also created a website, www.nationalairlinepolicy.com, where consumers can sign a petition calling for a national airline policy.
The A4A announced the campaign today and is meeting with legislators to explain the benefits of a national air policy.
