Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), an advocate of rail travel, died Monday at the age of 89. He was the oldest member of the Senate.

Lautenberg was the primary sponsor of the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act of 2007, a law that reauthorized the funding of Amtrak, ending a six-year stretch in which Amtrak was funded via stopgap measures.

Secaucus Junction, a major rail hub in northern New Jersey, is named for Lautenberg.

Lautenberg is also known for authoring legislation in the late 1980s that banned in-flight smoking on commercial airlines.
