Atlantic City hotel-casinos reopened Friday afternoon, five days after mandatory evacuations forced their closures in advance of Hurricane Sandy.
The Trump Plaza Hotel and Trump Taj Mahal Resorts were set to reopen their hotels at 4 p.m. local time, and their casinos two hours later, according to Trump Entertainment Resorts spokesman Brian Cahill. The Tropicana Casino & Resort also reopened at 4 p.m.
Caesars Entertainment was expected to reopen the Bally’s, Caesars, Harrah’s and Showboat resorts this afternoon. Revel said it would open on Saturday.
Atlantic City officials haven’t released total damage estimates, though the city’s Casino Redevelopment Investment Authority may be holding a press conference this afternoon.
Most of Atlantic City’s iconic boardwalk was spared, with mostly damage contained to sections that were already slated for demolition.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said Thursday that New Jersey would receive $10 million in emergency-relief funds from the federal government. Earlier this week, the feds released $10 million for New York.
