Barcelo Hotels & Resorts unveiled plans for a $45 million renovation project for two of its five properties in its all-inclusive Barcelo Maya complex in Mexico's Riviera Maya.

The two-phased project will begin May 6 and focuses on the Maya Beach and Maya Caribe resorts. Completion is scheduled for the end of 2014.

Planned improvements call for renovations of both lobbies, the addition of new bars and two a la carte restaurants at each property and the addition of the Barcelo Maya Entertainment Center with a sports bar, bowling alley, teen disco, kids club, water park and paddle tennis courts as well as the redesign of the 18-hole miniature golf course.

A new Premium Lounge Club and hospitality area also will be added.

The Barcelo Maya complex is comprised of five adjacent resorts, which include the Barcelo Maya Tropical, Barcelo Colonial and Barcelo Maya Palace Deluxe in addition to the Maya Beach and Maya Caribe resorts.

Room count for all five totals 2,751 rooms, 24 restaurants, 19 bars, five pools for adults, two water parks for kids and a spa.

The renovation comes on the heels of the multi-million-dollar renovation project at the Barcelo Bavaro Beach Resort in the Dominican Republic.
