JW Marriott opens in Azerbaijan

By Danny King
The first JW Marriott hotel in the Eastern European country of Azerbaijan opened in Baku this week.

The 243-room JW Marriott Absheron Baku offers views of the Caspian Sea and Baku’s Azadiq Square.

The hotel has about 35,000 square feet of meeting space as well as a spa, fitness center and four restaurants and bars.

Azerbaijan sits on the Caspian Sea and is bordered by Russia, Turkey and Iran. Baku, the country’s capital, has about 2 million people.

JW Marriott is at least the third upscale North American hotel brand to debut in Baku between late 2011 and the end of this year. Azerbaijan’s first Hilton opened in Baku last October, while Fairmont is slated to open the 318-room Fairmont Baku later this year.
