Commune Hotels and Resorts, parent of Thompson Hotels and Joie de Vivre Hospitality, will start operating its first Hawaii property next month.

The 42-year-old Seaside Hotel, a Waikiki property that owner United Airlines is selling, will undergo a $3 million renovation and join Commune's JDV Collection. When upgrades are completed, the hotel will be rebranded, Commune said.

Commune is bringing in Anthony Laurino to upgrade the 125-room hotel, which is located about three blocks from the beach and about halfway between the Hilton Hawaiian Village to the north and Kapiolani Park to the south.

Laurino worked on the redesign of Joie de Vivre’s Custom Hotel and the Barlo restaurant at the Hotel Erwin. Both properties are in Los Angeles.

The Seaside Hotel was built in 1970 and has been used by United Airlines as a perk for house employees and company retirees.

Thompson and Joie de Vivre announced this week that they named their parent company Commune Hotels & Resorts and are planning to debut a new brand later this year.
