The Brac is coming back -- slowly.
Cayman Brac, still recovering from Hurricane Paloma’s pummeling last November, welcomed its newest tourism development on June 17 with the opening of the 31-room Alexander Hotel.
The hotel overlooks Salt Water Pond at the southwestern end of the 12-mile-long island, near the airport. Cayman Brac and nearby Little Cayman form the Sister Islands, part of the Cayman Islands archipelago.
Owner, developer and builder Cleveland Dilbert originally planned to call the property the West Inn Hotel but later changed the name to the Alexander after his father.
The hotel has 29 one-bedroom units and two two-bedroom units; all have a kitchenette. Other facilities include a bar, a 50-seat restaurant and a pool.
Rates range between $100 and $125 per room, per night, double.
A formal opening will take place later this summer.
The Alexander is the only hotel open on the island. The 41-room Brac Reef Beach Resort is on track to reopen in November, although it did host its annual dive weekend over Father’s Day for people with special needs.
The 38-unit Carib Sands Beach Resort, also damaged by Paloma, plans to open later this year.
