The world's largest Holiday Inn will open in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, in 2016, as Holiday Inn parent InterContinental Hotels Group looks to meet increased religious-tourism demand in the area.

The hotel, which will have 1,238 rooms, is located in the Al Aziziyah setion of Makkah along the Pilgrimage route. The property will be developed by Makkah Real Estate Co.

Currently, the world's largest Holiday Inn is located in Las Vegas Sands' Sands Cotai Central district in Macau. That 1,224-room hotel opened in April 2012.
