FORT LAUDERDALE — There might be areas of their business where agents can skimp, but there are at least three where agents should spend the money to start and maintain a successful business, according to Joanie and Tom Ogg, principals of HomeBasedTravelAgent.com, speaking at the Travel Weekly CruiseWorld 2011 and Home Based Agent Show.
“Get an attorney capable of structuring your assets so that they’re bulletproof,” advised Tom Ogg. He noted that there are a host of legal and financial issues agencies can encounter if they don’t set up their accounts and business properly.
For one, he emphasized the importance of setting up a trust account where clients’ funds reside.
Agents also should invest in a domain name that describes their unique business model and a professionally-designed logo.
“Try to get a domain name that describes your business,” said Tom Ogg.
The Oggs were leading a seminar titled “Professional Engagement: The Seven Secrets to Success Starting and Operating Your Home Based Travel Business.”
The Oggs' seven secrets are:
• Choose your business concept
• Organize your structure and office
• Expand your knowledge
• Engage your professional recognition
• Evolve your business strategy
• Understand your legal issues
• Execute your marketing engagement
“You can’t make a lot of money as a travel professional unless you find something you specialize in, your niche,” said Joanie Ogg, encouraging agents to narrow their focus to differentiate from the competition.
