Travel companies pledge to hire veterans and military spouses

By Jerry Limone
ASTA has created the Joining Forces Travel Industry Coalition, a group of travel companies committed to providing jobs to veterans and military spouses.

Companies pledging their participation include Amadeus North America, American Express Consumer Travel Network, Avis Budget Group, Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, Enterprise Holdings, Hertz Corp. and Orbitz Worldwide.

The ASTA endeavor is an outgrowth of the Joining Forces Veterans Hiring Initiative, a program led by first lady Michelle Obama and second lady Jill Biden.

“We want to thank ASTA for supporting our veterans and military spouses with one of the most powerful commitments possible: a good job,” Michelle Obama said in a statement. “This commitment means that thousands of our heroes can build meaningful careers and provide for their families.”

To date, coalition companies have committed to providing nearly 3,000 jobs for veterans and military spouses by 2014, ASTA said. Some of the jobs are portable, enabling military spouses to retain their jobs when they move to another base.

ASTA will manage the coalition and serve as an information source for participating companies.

  • Consumer media discover that travel agents do exist

"Contrary to some thoughts, travel agents do exist ... We are usually able to get clients better prices, and we know we can see that clients have better experiences. And as our personal motto is: Our Service Travels With You."
