WTTC recognizes excellence in sustainable tourism

The World Travel & Tourism Council recognized three companies and one destination for best practices in sustainable tourism at its Tourism for Tomorrow Awards.

Saunders Hotel Group won the Community Benefit Award. WTTC called Saunders "a leader in sustainable tourism practices as far back as the early 1980s, when they converted an old police building in Boston into a historic hotel and worked with local community partners to build affordable housing in the same area."

Peruvian eco-tourism company Inkaterra won the Conservation Award. Inkaterra operates five hotels in Machu Picchu and the Madre de Dios area of the Amazon rainforest.

The Destination Stewardship Award went to Destination Roros, which has been instrumental in the tourism development of Roros, Norway, a former mining town and current Unesco World Heritage Site.

"In addition to cultural heritage, efforts have resulted in the rebounding of nature, including the southernmost population of wild reindeer in Scandinavia," WTTC said.

The Global Tourism Business Award went to Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts. WTTC said the Singapore-based company has a "longstanding commitment to sustainability."
