LAS VEGAS -- Marilyn Carlson Nelson today ceremoniously handed the reins of Carlson Cos. to Hubert Joly, who at the end of the week becomes the company’s first non-family CEO.
Nelson introduced her successor during daylong festivities that capped Carlson Cos.’ global business summit and celebrated the company's 70th anniversary. The day was at times an emotional one for Carlson Nelson, her family and company employees.
“I introduce him, confident he will carry forward the company with integrity, pride and caring,” said Carlson Nelson of Joly.
Last month, Carlson announced that Joly, who had been CEO of travel management company Carlson Wagonlit Travel since 2004, would be promoted to CEO of Carlson Cos.
The introduction opened Carlson's anniversary Imagination Summit. Speakers included Queen Silvia of Sweden, founder of the World Childhood Foundation with which Nelson works closely; poet Maya Angelou; Nestle CEO Peter Brabeck-Letmathe; and Klaus Schwab, founder of the World Economic Forum.
Following the speeches and tributes, Joly gave his inaugural speech as CEO, saying he was humbled and honored by the role. The summit was capped by tearful tributes from family and executives.
The company's four-day meeting was to wrap up with an evening gala featuring TV personality Regis Philbin, singer Tony Bennett and author/humorist Garrison Keillor.
