Mandalay Bay awaits delivery of Komodo dragon

April 18, 2008

KomodoThe deadliest lizard in the world is headed for the Las Vegas Strip.

The Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino will welcome a Komodo dragon to its Shark Reef Aquarium on June 20.

The Komodo dragon has 60 serrated teeth and sharp claws, but the lizard's deadliest weapon is its saliva, which contains about 50 kinds of bacteria. When the Komodo dragon bites prey, its saliva reacts with the prey's blood. Enzymes in the saliva prevent blood from clotting, causing the infection to spread and prey to die.

Komodo Dragons can reach up to 10 feet in length and can weigh up to 200 pounds. The endangered reptiles live on the southeast islands of Indonesia, including their primary habitat, Komodo Island. There are less than 5,000 Komodo dragons in the world.
