Airlines waive change fees on Cancun flights

By Gay Nagle Myers
American and JetBlue are among the airlines that have waived cancellation and change fees on flights to Cancun and Cozumel as Hurricane Rina churns towards Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

Customers holding tickets on American for flights through Oct. 29 can rebook for travel through Oct. 31 with no change fee.

JetBlue customers headed for Cancun on Oct. 27 and 28 must rebook and travel by Nov. 1.

Hurricane Rina, a Category 2 storm, already has caused cruise itinerary disruptions.

The storm is packing 100 mph winds, and strengthening is forecast in the next day or so, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The storm’s current track puts it near Cancun by Thursday and then curving east over western Cuba by the weekend.

Mexico issued a hurricane watch along the Yucatan coast and readied 1,130 storm shelters in Quintana Roo, the state that includes Cancun and Cozumel.

Rina is the 17th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which began June 1 and officially ends Nov. 30.
