NCL stops taking YTB bookings

January 28, 2009

YTB has advised its affiliates that Norwegian Cruise Line ceased taking new bookings from YTB, effective Jan. 20.

Kim Sorensen, president of YTB Travel Network, said NCL more than a year ago elected not to renew its contract with YTB, a move that had the effect of reducing commissions to YTB's affiliated referring travel agents by nearly 40%.

In turn, he said, YTB's bookings for NCL dropped.

Sorensen said, "We regret the action but [NCL] represents a very small percentage of our cruise business."

In the announcement to its associates, YTB said NCL will pay all commissions due on bookings made prior to Jan. 20 and that both NCL and YTB will service those bookings as usual.

As to the future, YTB said, "during these difficult economic times it is important that YTB and our affiliates and RTAs focus on our preferred suppliers (such as Carnival) for all of your travel needs."

Previously, the RCCL brands had ceased doing business with YTB, as of November 2007.

YTB did not win the Pinnacle Award 3x. Another one of Coach's lies and half truths. You people really are gullible. Kudos to NCL. I only wish more suppliers had the guts to kick these fake, psuedo agents to the curb!

We took a cruise on NCL. Their service is LOUSY and we are TRAVEL AGENTS! Way to go YTB. Funny how the biggest cruiseline in the industry, Carnival (which also owns Princess, Holland American, Costa, & Yachts of Seaborne) are all booking like crazy, and YTB received the Pinnacle Award not once, not twice, but 3 TIMES which is the highest honor in the industry. Those who live in glass houses best not throw stones.

Are "real" travel agents anointed like some religious order?, what makes someone a "real" travel agent? Since there is no standard federal or state travel training or agent license that I know of to practice as a travel agent, and no industry standard as to what level of sales is necessary to claim to be a "real" travel agent I think the designation is completely subjective and tainted. Also, the decision by some vendors to not do business with YTB is their right. In America you choose who you would like to do business with. I think the energy wasted by TTA's on this issue would be better spent in serving their customers than in poisoning the clientele of other agencys. If vendors would like to standardize the requirements for FAM trips, reduced rate travel and commission rates then all "travel agents" can operate on the same playing field. I welcome it. I applaud the letter from Pro Travel's CEO who got it right.
