Royal Princess fire results in cruise cancellations

June 21, 2009

Thursday’s fire in the Royal Princess’ engine room caused more damage than originally thought, so the ship had to be moved to a shipyard for repairs, said Princess Cruises on Friday.

Besides cutting short a 12-day cruise from Civitavecchia, Italy to Athens, the fire will result in the cancellation of a 12-day cruise departing Athens on June 25.

The fire broke out on Thursday evening, soon after the Royal Princess departed Port Said, Egypt. All 733 passengers and 393 crew members were accounted for.

Affected passengers on both voyages will get a full refund of the fare, plus a future cruise credit equal to 25% of the cruise fare paid.

Princess on Friday said it was securing flights home for all passengers onboard the Royal Princess. The cruise line said it paid for passengers' homeward flights, transfers and associated hotel stays.
