JetBlue to choose between NYC, Orlando for HQ

October 16, 2009

JetBlue narrowed the choices for its new headquarters to either the New York City metro area or Orlando.

The airline, now based in Forest Hills, N.Y., said the final decision won't be made until sometime during the first quarter of 2010.

Both cities, JetBlue said, have "tremendous synergies with the JetBlue brand and business model."

Several U.S. cities had vied to be the new home for the low-cost carrier, sending in confidential proposals for review.

I'm sure that the tax situation in NYS has implications & NYS has shown complete disregard for companies with new taxes. The MTA Tax alone must be costing JetBlue a fortune.

If they want to remain a low cost carrier in the eyes of the public, they need to be responsible enough to spend money wisely. NY will make them more elitist and unattractive to the clients they are trying to attract. You have to watch that bottom line and Orlando will save the company tons of money.

Anyone know why they can't just expand where they are? The cost of relocation to another state or a city that is more than a reasonable commute from their current location is highly disruptive, very costly, in terms of hard costs, and very costly from the loss of collective knowledge for those that choose not to move and those upper mgmt. chooses not to offer a relocation package. It seems many a company dealt themselves a huge financial blow by relocating, especially at a time when their industry is struggling to eek out profits.

I agree that Orlando would be the best choice for many reasons. The cost of living is less, therefore perhaps the savings could be passed onto the consumers. That would most likely change with a move to NYC where it's $$$$. Plus, a less congested area for a hub.
