Report: Italian couple sues cruise line over 'gay cruise'

October 16, 2009

An Italian couple is suing a cruise line for about $4,000 alleging that they were not told the vacation they purchased was a gay-themed cruise.

According to London-based Daily Mail newspaper, an unnamed middle-aged husband and wife were "embarrassed after spotting people they knew, but had not realized were gay," on a cruise by Naples, Italy-based Grimaldi Lines from Civitavecchia, Italy, to Barcelona, Spain.

The couple booked the cruise last month using loyalty points from a supermarket, the report said, and didn't realize the cruise was gay-themed until their arrival at the port, where TV crews were covering the "Revuelta gay cruise," Italy's first all homosexual cruise.

The report quotes the lawyer representing the couple as saying that the couple booked directly with the cruise line and was not told about the Revuelta cruise.

The report also said that the cruise organizers, Gay.It, said that the suit was "a clear case of homophobia."

:o) They need to lighten up and learn to go with the flow! Now if this was a cruise for folks suffering from Swine flu....then maybe I would sue! lol

Lots of opinions, but none count. It is up to Italian law and how it is interrupted in their court. Any Italian lawyers in the house?

If the client did not read or disregarded information from the cruise about it being a gay cruise then shame on them. If there was no disclosure by the cruise line then shame on the cruise line and the client should get their money back. I would feel the same way since I am not gay and I would also feel the same way if I got on board and found out it was a Hannah Montana cruise with nothing but screaming tweens on board. So much for a relaxing vacation. I liked the comment about googling a cruise date and cruise to see if anything pops up.

Why most comments are saying they should have booked through a travel agent??? I guess no one read the article correctly. First, they booked directly with the cruise line, with points (which means: FREE cruise. Second, if this is the case, I am sure a disclosure was written some place, on the ad that is was a gay theme cruise and they may not have even read it, since it was a freebie this couple did not even care to read all disclosures. We do not know the whole story.

Like the res. agent said, most of the time agents in individual res. can't tell you what groups are onboard even if they did know there is such a thing as privacy laws. About the only way I know of to find out if a sailing is being promoted to a specific group is to google it and see if it pops up. I bet that 99% of agents don't address these type possiblities because 99% of the time it's a non issue, this is being blown way out of proportion.
