Holland America ship turned away from Costa Rica port

October 22, 2009

A Holland America Line ship was turned away from Limón, Costa Rica, due to a dockworkers strike.

The strike also has prevented cargo ships from delivering food and supplies for three days.

According to Costa Rica’s English-language newspaper Tico Times, cargo ships have been unable to dock since Tuesday.

Another publication, InsideCostaRica.com, quoted the Costa Rica President Rodrigo Arias as saying that the loss of the cruise ship, the 1,848-passenger Zuiderdam, would cost the local economy about $175,000 in spending on taxis, food, crafts and other purchases.

According to the report, the conflict between the presidential administration and dockworkers in Limón over wages has been ongoing.

On Tuesday, the report said, workers began a protest for higher pay and proceeded to block three outgoing ships in Moín and two in Limón.

Holland America Line said the ship stayed at sea and will return to Fort Lauderdale as planned on Oct. 24.

The line also said it plans to continue calling in Limón, and that its next call there is on Oct. 31.

#5 Here, a full time travel agent. Sorry; I was wrong about Travel INS; I failed to think about what is not covered. Contraire about me suing at the drop of a hat; more so thinking about all the little things people really do sue over, like the recent Italian couple that self-booked on the Gay.IT cruise and blame the cruise line, or another agent under my Host, sued by a client because there were non-English speaking people on their tour bus on an EU Tour! I stand by my comment "the pax were denied an experince they paid for and expected", else they would have booked several cruises to nowhere for much less. #9 may be able to shed some insight as to the passengers reactions and if HAL made any concessions. @#10 Agreed, "Accurate reporting is important", IF it pertains to the news article. Who the President is, is irrelevant. How about an original thought, instead of hijacking #7's ideas

I applaud the union for taking a stand. The port of Limon is better spent on the ship.

when scuba diving is planed for the day it is indeed a hardship not to dock.

Why do some people assume that anyone who makes a comment averse to their interest must be a lawyer?! I am a lawyer (and a travel agent), did not write that comment, and am not a bottom dwelling blood sucker (what's the difference between a lawyer and a catfish?...) By the way, the passengers were compensated by HAL. $5.36 (really!)
