Oasis of the Seas barely clears bridge in Denmark

November 02, 2009

Several international news outlets noted that the Oasis of the Seas came narrowly close to not clearing Denmark’s Great Belt Bridge.

Royal Caribbean International said it was well aware of the situation, and that it had planned to lower the ship's retractable smokestacks in order to make the crossing.

The Oasis left the STX Europa shipyard in Finland on Friday. The ship is scheduled to be named in Fort Lauderdale on Nov. 30.

In order to leave the Baltic and get into open ocean, the 220,000-ton vessel had to clear the bridge, which joins two Danish islands.

According to several reports, the ship cleared the bridge by two feet even with its funnels down. Traffic had to be stopped while it crossed, just to be safe.
