Tropical Storm Ida could strengthen

November 04, 2009

Tropical Storm Ida, the ninth of the Atlantic hurricane season, could be a late bloomer.

The season, which officially ends Nov. 30, has seen several "back door storms" form in November in the Gulf of Mexico and head west to east over the Caribbean as Hurricane Lenny did in 1999.

Ida has top winds of 60 mph and strengthening is possible before the storm makes landfall Wednesday night over the east coast of Nicaragua, according to the National Hurricane Center.

After that, it’s anyone’s guess. Ida could dissipate over the higher terrain of Central America or restrengthen as it moves over the waters of the northwestern Caribbean
