Rough seas to delay Oasis arrival

November 06, 2009

The Oasis of the Seas will arrive in Fort Lauderdale two days behind schedule because of strong winds and high seas, Royal Caribbean said on Friday.

The 5,400-passenger ship is now scheduled to arrive at Port Everglades on the morning of Nov. 13. The late arrival will not affect any inaugural events, promotional activities or revenue sailings, said Royal Caribbean.

There is a very big difference between a cruise ship and an ocean liner, and how they behave out in the Atlantic. The Oasis of the Sea may be the world's newest and biggest ship; but, I would wage a bet it would not be arriving late if it had been built with an ocean liners bow. I am happy to be in the huge minority of passengers that have gone trans-Atlantic multiple times on a liner - arrival at either end without the presence jetlag makes the price of the experience well worthwhile!

Don;t forget Cunard's transatlantic crossings. And right now their deals are amazingly inexpensive. I was fortunate enough to be on the QM2's inaugural crossing from NYC to Southampton sailing along side the QE2 for the first ever dual crossings of "Queens". A transatlantic crossing is quite the experience and considerably better than your average cruise.

Watch the video. The ship looks like it is going thru calm seas. No one on the bridge is rocking, swaying NOTHING! Amazing with 40' waves!

I look forward to the Oasis. I live at Rye Beach, NH, population just above 5000. This ship could take my whole town at one time! She is 4 times the size of the Titanic, and, as you can see, the sea is no easy place to be this time of the year. It is like a toothpick in a bathtub full of moving water. But, if the freighters, much smaller, make it, I would rather be on the Oasis!! WHAT A MEGASHIP!! I am perhaps in the 4th percentile of the USA that has crossed the ocean by ship!! This jet age makes most Americans ocean illiterate. This is why you must book clients on "positioning" cruises or RTW cruises to let them see the Ocean at her fullest. It is a phenomenal experience.
