Waikiki’s Hawaiiana Hotel to close

November 06, 2009

The 93-unit Hawaiiana Hotel has stopped accepting reservations and will close, according to reports.

The sign above the hotel's main entrance was removed earlier this week, but no closing date has been made public.

The low-rise Waikiki hotel, which opened in 1955, has gone through foreclosure, bankruptcy and a sale, according to reports.

The Hawaiiana has been popular among budget travelers and guests fond of booking rooms for months at a time.

The three-building hotel is adjacent to the new Trump International Hotel and Tower Waikiki complex.

I think these posters need to remember that the reason these small, "local" places are closing is precisely BECAUSE visitors want a more deluxe, fabricated Hawaiian experience, rather than an authentic one. Visitors to the islands always choose to buy expensive commercial luau tickets rather than patronize community-run, nonprofit luaus. Don't lament the passing of the Hawaiiana. If the hotel were always full, it would not have gone into bankruptcy.

What is really sad is the fact that all resort destinations globally are becoming the same. You can't tell if you are in Hawaii or Acapulco. Developers are making the world so generic why does anyone want the hassle of traveling. You might as well check into a resort hotel in your own town or state. Maybe someone will wake up and realize that people want experiences, not just mega hotels and resorts. Developers should fully embrace the local culture, architecture, cuisine, etc. to create unique experiences for their guests. Otherwise it will be a world of sameness with Starbucks, McDonald's and WalMart's everywhere.

Beach Walk really was old Hawaii. I worked next door to the Hawaiiana, at Mike's Broil Your Own from 1971-1973 and can assure you that, even then, the area was under attack from developers. During my last visit in 2006, it was like a different planet, sadly.

how very sad to see one of the original hotels in Waikiki that is very Island style, close. the quiet street of Beach Walk will soon disappear and become like the rest of the Waikiki area. Lets Hope that the Breakers Hotel can still survive moving forward. sad to see so much 'big hotels' take over all of Hawaii.
