AirTran seat backs to have ads

November 20, 2009

AirTran is outfitting its 138-aircraft fleet with seat-back ads.

By the beginning of December, the back of each seat will feature a 2.5-by-9-inch full-color ad, the first being a Mother Nature Network promotion for a chance to win a cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas.

The carrier said the ads will be "tasteful" and "unobtrusive."

if you think that seat advertising is going to persuade airlines to drop ancillary passenger fees, you are kidding yourself. this advertising revenue will be IN ADDITION TO all of the other fees, which are here to stay - forever. Don't believe me? Just google some of the recent airline CEO briefings on the subject. t generates to much revenue for them to ignore it or do away with it. if you don't like baggage fees, support WN.

This is NOT a new concept. USAIRWAYS has done it for years, and some of the ads are pretty neat too.

AirTran does charge for baggage and seats. I don't know if they carry meals on long-haul flights. I seriously doubt that they will reduce or elimate the bag/seat charges even if this ad space is successful.

Good for Air Tran, they can make money thru marketing, instead of nickel and diming us thru seats, luggage and meals. maybe it's time to give the passengers a break and get the money from advertising instead of us consumers because if we are on their plane, we purchased a ticket to be there it's not a free ride so why should we pay for luggage. Hopefully other airlines will follow suit, and think twice about the extra fees they charge.
