More than 2 million visitors descended on Berlin this year to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, setting a new record for tourism in the city.
Nov. 9, the actual day of the anniversary, drew hundreds of thousands of locals and visitors who took part in the Festival of Freedom at the Brandenburg Gate.
"Over the last few days Berliners have shown millions of guests what they have done with their city in the 20 years since the fall of the wall," said Burkhard Kieker, CEO of Berlin Tourismus Marketing.
Kieker noted that the visitor numbers have been rising steadily throughout the year and said he expected media coverage of the event to help draw even more tourists in 2010.
