Regional carrier Windward Islands Airlines (Winair) terminated flights between St. Maarten and Anguilla on Dec. 1.

In a statement on the airline's website, marketing executive Claudio Buncamper said decreased demand and rising costs "forced the airline to make such a critical decision."

St. Maarten-based Winair is keeping its sales office in Anguilla. The office will be managed by partner Anguilla Air Services, a charter airline that offers four roundtrips a day between Anguilla and St. Maarten but requires a minimum of two passengers per flight. The one-way fare for the 10-minute flight is $80.

Winair passengers holding tickets can use the same ticket for the Anguilla Air Services flights.

Passengers also can take a 20-minute ferry ride to Anguilla from Marigot on the French side of St. Martin. The one-way fare is approximately $15 per person.

In March, state-owned Winair eliminated routes from St. Maarten to St. Kitts, Tortola and Dominica, reduced Antigua service to one weekly flight.

Winair currently serves Antigua, St. Eustatius, Saba, St. Barts, Barbuda, Montserrat and Nevis.
