UPDATED: Acapulco’s convention center closes

December 04, 2009

The Acapulco International Convention Center closed Nov. 30 and is seeking new investors to renovate the facility, according to the Acapulco Destination Marketing Office.

The convention center will temporarily reopen to host the Tianguis Turistico conference, April 25 to 28.

While the center is closed, Acapulco suggests that groups hold their events at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess or the Grand Hotel Acapulco & Convention Center.

Once investors are found and the facility renovated it will be in a better position to compete with other destinations, officials said.

“The relaunch of the Acapulco Convention Center will further promote the "new" Acapulco and reposition the Golden Zone as a contemporary and modern destination,” C. Ernesto Rodriguez Escalona, Secretary of Tourism Development, said in a statement. “The new convention center will be equipped to compete with other national and international tourist destinations and create additional economic opportunities for Acapulco.”

The Fairmont Acapulco Princess recently introduced a new Exhibit Hall located on the hotel's property. The $3 million hall features 20,000 square feet of exhibition space with additional space to host conferences and events for a maximum capacity of 4,300 people.

The Grand Hotel Acapulco & Convention Center is currently undergoing the first stages of an extensive renovation and remodeling project that includes 14 meetings rooms and El Cabaret Ballroom that can accommodate up to 900 in theater-style seating and up to 600 for a themed banquet.

Renovations will also include new room categories, hotel lounges, restaurants and a pool as well as the construction of a new, exclusive spa. The new meetings spaces and ballroom are expected to be completed by the end of 2010.

This article has been updated with further information on meetings and conventions spaces in the surrounding area.
