The Pompidou Centre, the largest modern-art museum in Europe, reopened Thursday following a 24-day employee strike.

Employees at the Paris museum went on strike in protest of a government plan to replace only half of retiring civil servants, a measure that would eliminate 26 jobs at the Pompidou Center in 2010, according to French news agency Agence France-Presse.

Radio France Internationale reports that employees voted to suspend the strike, but that their union plans to call a new strike in January, said AFP.

Workers at other museums in France, including the Louvre and the Palace of Versailles, also have caused closures with strikes over the past few weeks, but most employees have returned to work.
