Report: JAL to leave Oneworld for SkyTeam

January 04, 2010

Japan Airlines and the Enterprise Turnaround Initiative Corporation of Japan – the Japanese government-appointed panel charged with charting the airline’s future course – has decided to ditch the Oneworld alliance for SkyTeam, according to a Dow Jones story Monday citing a Japanese newspaper report.

JAL denied making any alliance decision, saying it is still negotiating with American and Delta, Dow reported.

Without citing where it obtained the information, the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper said the airline will join the Delta and the SkyTeam alliance and is now working to terminate negotiations with American Airlines, Dow Jones said.

A tie-up with Delta will likely help JAL in its revival efforts, the paper said. While Delta's market share of transpacific routes linking Japan and North America stands at 32%, that of American Airlines amounts to 8%.

A tie-up with Delta will enable JAL, whose market share in these routes stands at 22%, to slash its own services and boost codesharing services with Delta, according to the Yomiuri Shimbun report.

JAL needed help, but will not find it with Delta. The Delta corporate mentality is defensive, offensive and abrasive. It is "my way or no way". Their tactics are gestapo-ish and rude. Their flights are a nightmare, their personnel are grumpy and unhelpful. They cannot make money, no matter who they buy or sweet talk (except the US Governments pension planners). Somewhere, in their history they will have to learn that they must improve their corporate culture and their relationships within the industry. If not, they will pay the price down the line.

Delta recently took over Northwest and built a joint-venture with Air France/KLM. As a result, Delta is now the leading US based carrier. The 'big mistake' comment is out of touch with the reality of 2010. JAL is making the right move.

Honestly, from a business and leisure travelers perspective, can anyone name a single differentiating point between American, Delta and United? They all seem pretty much the same to me, copying everything each other does with no innovation what so ever. And none of them have decent customer service, not even for 1st Class International passengers. (Telling 1st Class passengers on an 8 hour flight they only have 1 bottle of water per passenger? Please.....) So it should a decision based on markets and market share, not on anything else.

I applaud the decision to go with DL. I stopped flying AA more than 40 years ago when they nearly killed my dog as hold luggage. UA good? I don't think so. Their routes and service has fallen sharply. At one time, UA was my airline of choice. They have given up the lead in Star Alliance to CO.
