Obama: Aviation security must be better but not too onerous

January 07, 2010

President Obama on Thursday pledged to enhance security without making air travel too onerous.

"We must do better with keeping dangerous people off airplanes while facilitating air travel," Obama said during a televised press briefing.

Obama said the country is now setting aside "significant investments" to deploy and develop enhanced screening methods and technology. He also called for improved international airport scanning procedures and technology.

But, the president said, "We will not succumb to a siege mentality."

I can definitely confirm the check-in process to be longer. On my way back from Canada last weekend, I was not even allowed to bring a headset case, camera case, or similar within my carry-on luggage which was, due to safety regulations, required to not be a briefcase or backpack but a small pocket book, laptop bag or similar. I guess this opens up a complete new fashion line for see-through bags. At this time, running out of options, I traveled with a recyclable supermarket bag. However, being scanned quite in detail I faced the airlines’ “contribution to patriotism” first-hand by not being charged for any of my 5 bags on my way back from Canada. http://pass-consulting-travel.blogspot.com/2010/01/airline-security-today-and-its-impact.html

"We must do better with keeping dangerous people off airplanes"...Has no one thought to go back to the agent at the check-in counter that gave this "nut" a boarding card without seeing a visa/passport, paying for a one-way ticket with cash, and no luggage. Then, goes through security without visa/passport. RED FLAGS should have gone up!! If this doesn't sound like a "setup job", then, there is some land in the desert I want to sell to the government. If they don't already own it. The madness has got to stop at the ticket counters. PERIOD! Everything stated above should have been an alert, but he went straight through. Delta should be investigated. The personnel that let him through, and they should be held responsible.

It is a contradictory statement! If we are to enhance security then it WILL make the process longer and possibly irksome. That is the price you pay for security! That is the price you pay for freedom. Are we to give up security because of inconvenience. It seems the President will. The rest of the world has had 2-3 hour check-in proceedures for many years now. It's about time the Americans get used to it.
