Antigua man arraigned in killing of vacationer

February 02, 2010

A 24-year-old man from Dominica accused of fatally stabbing a San Francisco woman during a cruise stopover was arraigned Monday on a murder charge in Antigua.

Police in Antigua said that suspect Tishara Daniel, who has confessed to the murder of Nina Elizabeth Nilssen, has been remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison in St. John’s to await a May 28 hearing.

Daniel was not required to enter a plea. His lawyer, Dane Hamilton Jr., declined to speak with the media after the arraignment, according to the Antigua Sun.

Police superintendent Nuffield Burnette said that Daniel was carrying the victim's camera when he was arrested Jan. 29 near the crime scene in the English Harbour area.

Detectives also have what they believe to be the weapon used in the crime, according to assistant police commissioner Jacques Ouellette.

You're always safest sticking with the cruise line's shore excursions. Anytime you go off on your own in any cruise port, you are putting yourself at risk for crime; as well as missing the cruise ship's departure from port.

It's St. John's (note the apostrophe) in Antigua, not the US Virgin Islands!

To #1, it might help to know that St. John's is the capital of Antigua and Barbuda. There is also St. John's, Newfoundland, then St. John in USVI and New Brunswick. Knowledge of geography is helpful to know in the Travel profession.

A British prison on St. John? Would someone clarify that statement??? I've been to St. John many times and was never aware of its existence.
