Airlines would have an additional 45 days to comply with a new Transportation Department rule requiring carriers to publish flight delay information on their websites, under an extension proposed this week by the Transportation Department.

The airlines were supposed to start posting flight-delay information on their websites as part of new tarmac-delay rules and other passenger-protection measures scheduled to start April 29.

But the Air Transport Association, Regional Airline Association and Air Carrier Association of America requested an additional 90 days for airlines to comply, saying the changes would mean extensive changes to carriers' reporting systems, making it impossible to meet the deadline.

The DOT agrees additional time to comply with the posting of flight delay information on the carriers' websites "may be warranted to ensure the posting of complete and accurate information," but the agency doesn't think an additional three months is necessary.

The new proposed compliance date is June 14.
