Hotel to reward guests if Ravens win and score 35

(Hotels) Permanent link

Guests at the Royal Sonesta Harbor Court in Baltimore can score big points if the home team wins the big one on Sunday.

If the Ravens win and score 35 points, guests can take 35% off the room rate for any night through Feb. 28.

The limit is 40%, meaning the Ravens would need to score 40 points by the end of Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers for guests to get the highest discounted room rate.

So far through three rounds of this year's NFL playoffs, the Ravens have averaged 30 points per game.

The last time the Ravens faced the 49ers was Thanksgiving Day 2011, with Baltimore winning 16-6 in a hard-fought, defensive battle.

Even if the Ravens lose, the hotel will honor a 15% discount through the promotional period.

The "Ravens Win, You Win" promotion must be booked at Sonesta.com; blackout dates are Feb. 14-16.

High-tech tourism in Rio

 Permanent link

Tourists in Rio de Janeiro searching for the best beaches, bars or bands only need to look down at the sidewalks of the cidade maravilhosa ("marvelous city" in Portuguese).

Embedded into the black-and-white mosaics that decorate sidewalks all over town will be 30 two-dimensional bar codes at beaches, vistas and historic sites.

The first have been installed at Arpoador, a massive boulder at the end of Ipanema Beach. Onlookers download an app to their smartphones or tablets, photograph the icon and are directed to a website that churns out tourist information in Portuguese, Spanish or English, along with a map of the area.

Locals, who are repeatedly asked for directions by visitors, like this technology a lot, saying that more tourist information has long been needed in Rio.

Flu not deterring travelers

 Permanent link

This season’s flu outbreak may have flattened millions in the U.S., but it’s not keeping most travelers from packing up and flying out.

While some surgical facemasks have been spotted in airports in Charlotte, Miami and Dallas, very few travelers appear to be bailing on travel plans.

Travel Guard said that while questions about coverage in the event of sickness are the most common ones asked, “it’s hard to say whether or not there is more concern this year.”

Sandals has reported no flu cancellations, a refrain echoed by Denise Hangsbleden, owner of Travel Your Way in Belleville, Ill.

"I’ve had one client concerned about flu and noroviruses on cruises. The only reference I heard about the flu was more about a gym. Again, that is what insurance is for, whether for a cruise or land vacation," she said.

Where the flu has hit, and hit hard, is in offices and businesses. This year’s outbreak not only is more widespread than in years past, but the strain tends to make people sicker than usual and for longer.

At Cook Travel Agency in New York City, more than 40% of the staff of 35 has been laid low by the head-burning, cough-wracking, muscle-aching influenza.

JetBlue on top in San Juan

(Airlines, Caribbean) Permanent link

JetBlue is the No. 1 airline in San Juan and has been for almost a year now, according to a Bureau of Transportation Statistics chart published in the aviation blog at DallasNews.com.

According to the chart, JetBlue surpassed American Airlines/American Eagle in market share last February, and the gap grew to a 7-point edge for JetBlue last September.

Reporter Terry Maxon said that American’s fall is “probably more dramatic” than the chart indicates because American’s numbers don’t include Executive Airlines, which will cease flying out of San Juan on April 1 (Executive operates under the American Eagle brand).
