Goats are the landscapers at San Francisco's airport

 Permanent link

Goats at SFOGuess what? Goats make better lawn mowers than lawn mowers and are a lot cheaper than hiring a landscaping company on a regular basis.

San Francisco Airport hired a herd of 250-300 bovids (goats) to munch the excess weeds, dry shrubs and excess grass along the marshlands on the west side of the airport as part of its fire hazard abatement program.

Airport officials leased the herd from a farm about 80 miles from the airport. Chemicals and heavy machinery were deemed dangerous to the endangered San Francisco garter snake and the California red-legged frog, which also reside on the airport's property.

A herder and an environmental biologist tend to the goats, which apparently are not fazed by the noise of takeoffs and landings.

‘Yellow Submarine’ floating hotel opens in Liverpool

(Hotels) Permanent link

What’s next, a “Golden Slumbers” mortuary?

That’s what Beatles enthusiasts may be asking after the recent opening of the Yellow Submarine floating hotel in the band’s hometown of Liverpool, England, according to the U.K.’s Daily Mail.

The three-room hotel opened at Albert Dock on the Mersey River and includes touches such as 3D televisions and a scooter that was in the film version of the Who’s “Quadrophenia.” (We won’t quibble with the band mash-up.)

The sub was acquired by local businessman Alfie Bubbles (yes, that’s his name) from Paramount Pictures. The sub was used in the 1990 Sean Connery film “The Hunt for Red October,” so the hotel’s got no shortage of U.K. icons.

No word on whether guests will get refunded if they don’t experience skies of blue and seas of green.
