Travel Guard says insurance promotion is 'in poor taste'

(Travel agents) Permanent link   All Posts

Seems that it isn’t just agents who are unhappy over an Australian travel insurance seller’s promotion, “The Travel Agent Is Dead,” which we blogged about on Friday.

Travel Guard, which is owned by Chartis, the underwriter for Sydney-based iTrek, responded to an email from Travel Weekly with this comment:

"The company that is sponsoring this promotion is an online Australian agency called iTrek that writes travel insurance business in Australia,” wrote Tom Zavadsky, Travel Guard's executive vice president. "ITrek is not a Chartis or Travel Guard company. Chartis is simply the underwriter, and has no role in the creating or executing of marketing programs for iTrek products.

"On Friday, Chartis informed the agency that the program is in poor taste and not a good fit for the Chartis brand. We have been in touch with our Australia regional team, and have requested that iTrek discontinue this promotion.

"In no way does Travel Guard endorse this marketing approach and believes this promotion is in very poor taste."

Travel Weekly had written to Travel Guard to try to clarify the relationship between Chartis and iTrek.

As of early Tuesday afternoon, iTrek was still running the promotion, which invites consumers to make 30-second videos around "The Travel Agent Is Dead" theme.

However, Chartis’ name and logo had been removed from the bottom of the promotion's web page.

How long have there been travel agents? How long has iTrek been around? Anyone remember Rennaisance Cruises?

So, if there is no connection with Travel Guard, I am a little confused pertaining to the info on iTrek's web site which is pasted below.

The truth is that travel agents are not dead…

There is a battle going on to get consumers to buy insurance on line rather than via a travel agent…

Don’t know who’s right but I do know which side I’m on..

Below is an interesting reply to the TW article. You probably saw it, I did not see it yesterday.

Attention everyone.....this is not legit. Chartis not anyone under Chartis is promoting this so called "travel agents are dead promotion". I just found out what is behind this and it turns out that it is an online TA from Australia who has connection with itrek and wants all your insurance business directed to itrek because she will be getting a share. Trust me on this one. What idiot!!!! I just wonder why Travel Weekly did not check this out before advertising such an article?

poor taste maybe but not really so much different than a fair number of initiatives taken by some travel suppliers in the interest of maximizing their distribution channels. I am thankful that a significant population still values the service of a professional travel consultant.

I've got a new logo - TRAVELGUARD is DEAD and I have thrown out all brochures and will only sell TRAVELSAFE insurance after this promo. The real losers are the Australian public that won't have any human contacts to book travel if this rotten ad succeeds. Here's hoping that itrek comes to a quick and painful death.

Joan, why are you keeping your Travelsafe brochures? Didn't you know that the people at Travelsafe test makeup on baby monkeys??? Please also throw away your Travelsafe brochures and I will send you some for my company, TIFGAWCR (Travel Insurance for Gullible Agents Who Can't Read) I will pay you high commission!
