Sandals Resorts CEO Adam Stewart put himself through the ringer for his Facebook fans. Or in this case, through the ring of fire.
Last August, Stewart made a fiery challenge to encourage friends and family to "like" the Sandals Facebook page in an effort to reach its goal of 250,000 likes.
The goal was reached in less than two months. True to his word, Stewart recently fulfilled his outrageous pledge to zipline above the Jamaican rainforest through a ring of fire with the help of David Waine, a special-effects expert behind the Hollywood blockbuster "Mission Impossible" and the hit franchise "Fast and Furious."
"I've made many important decisions in my life, but this ranks as one of the most questionable. As I was teetering on a ledge in the middle of the rainforest with the heat of the flames on my face from 100 feet away, it became very, very real. However, with great risk comes great reward and I'm delighted that we smashed our target and even more delighted to walk away with only a singed arm and leg," Stewart said.
The safety team immediately extinguished the embers on his arm and leg as Stewart's wife and children watched anxiously.
Stewart enlisted the help of Island Routes Caribbean Adventures and Caribbean tour operator Chukka to successfully pull off his daring feat.
Special effects expert Waine pointed out that a trained stuntman is always on hand to do the actual stunt or at least test it at first.
"For someone like Stewart, the CEO of a high profile company such as Sandals Resorts International to do it himself, is extremely unusual. He definitely seems to go above and beyond for his company," Waine said.
