US Airways to launch Phoenix-Jamaica flight

August 05, 2009

Travelers from the West headed to Jamaica will catch a big break this winter, thanks to US Airways’ new seasonal service from Phoenix to Montego Bay.

The flight, which runs from Dec. 18 through April 12, operates Fridays through Mondays from Phoenix, departing at 10 a.m. and arriving in Jamaica at 4:53 p.m.

From Jamaica, the flight operates Thursdays through Sundays, departing at 12:25 p.m. and arriving at 4:09 p.m. arrival in Phoenix.

Montego Bay is the first nonstop Caribbean destination from US Airways’ Phoenix hub. The carrier currently serves Montego Bay from Boston, Charlotte and Philadelphia.

The new flight "is great news for customers in the western U.S. who now have their first one-stop connecting option to Jamaica west of Texas," according to Andrew Nocella, US Airways’ senior vice president of marketing and planning.

Jamaica Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett, said, "The launch of the service from Phoenix allows us to welcome many more visitors from major cities in the western U.S. Tapping directly into these markets is part of our strategy to boost tourism arrivals, and this nonstop service is vital to achieving that objective."

what's the price? Is it cheaper than LAX with Air Jamaica morning flights? Phoenix itself is mostly older population and Jamaica is a younger person destination, so are they giving other close west coast cities to get their in time for the connection?

To: "Are they nuts???" Please flag your agency to warn of ignorance. The flight times are beautiful. The only other same day option from the west coast arrives in MBJ at 8:20 pm. US has designed the times to allow connections from 28 cities. Air Jamaica had overnight service (inconvenient to families) and was serving only Socal with difficult interline connections one way, overnight at LAX the other. I'm sure Jamaica should shut its doors during the months YOU don't sell - most agents I work with sell the destination 12 months a year by seeking a diverse client base. Get a clue!

Finally a way to get to the Caribbean without stopping on the east coast. Now if they could do the same type of flight for Bermuda!

Are they nuts??? Why would people want to waste a whole day getting to Jamaica when they can take night flights and get there in the morning. This flight does nothing for the West Coast...it is inconvenient and the major travel market for the west is Spring and Summer. Look at the history of the Air Jamaica bookings out of LAX. 80% of my Jamaica business is from March to October. And US Air wants to know why they lose money...dumb decisions like this is why!
