The fourth annual Cozumel Scuba Fest is slated for Dec. 8 to 13.

The event is geared for all levels of divers, including beginners, but this year it features new products and routes based on advance-level diving off Cozumel and introduces advanced dive tours on the Yucatan peninsula, according to Gilda Sigie, festival director.

The route for advanced divers comprises nine dives and requires Advanced Open Water Diver certification.

The route visits reefs in the area north of Cozumel, the sunken ship Xicotencatl (sunk in 1999, 82 feet deep).

The Yucatan dive tour explores the underground, freshwater ceynotes (cave-like, crystal-clear pools) as well as rivers and submerged passageways on the Yucatan peninsula.

A highlight of the festival for all levels of divers is the scuba route of Jean-Michel Cousteau, inaugurated during the 2013 fest when he unveiled an offshore bronze sculpture of his father, Jacques-Yves Cousteau.

The route follows several of the favorite reefs that enthralled the elder Cousteau when he first visited Cozumel in the 1960s.
