HERNDON, Va. -- As family travel continues to boom, the definition of what constitutes a family has widened as well.

Roots & Wings Excursions, a company that specializes in intergenerational travel, designed a Bermuda program for women who want to travel with their adult daughters. The program is part of the Mother & Daughter Discoveries collection, which includes antiquing and quilting trips in the Amish country; shopping and theater in New York; sailing, antiquing and gardening along the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, and shopping and sightseeing in London.

The trip, called Bermuda Horizons, is offered in conjunction with Horizons & Cottages, an 18th century Relais & Chateaux property. The package includes four nights' accommodations, a welcome cocktail party, breakfast, nightly dinners, barbecue lunch and a homes and gardens tour. Also included are an island sail and glass-bottom-boat cruise, transfers, baggage handling, taxes and gratuities.

"The genesis of this concept was about 10 years ago, when I arranged a trip for my mother, two of her childhood friends and their adult daughters to Phoenix as a Christmas gift," said company founder and president Carol Goldsmith. "The six of us had a tour through the Grand Canyon and Sedona, and that started the tradition that has since taken us all over the U.S. and on numerous trips abroad."

Goldsmith, who had been in the China-Orient tourism business before founding Roots & Wings, was approached by other mothers and daughters who had heard of the company. "I was doing these tours as a hobby when last year we decided to do regularly scheduled small groups of mothers and daughters as well as other intergenerational concepts," she said.

Cofounder and vice president Fred Credno brings years of airline and tour operator experience to the business. Other trips feature fathers and sons, single parents and children, grandparents and grandchildren and, of course, parents and children. "We have really struck a chord," Goldsmith said of her company's extended-family focus.

The company works only with travel agents and offers land-only itineraries. Responses to advertisements in such consumer publications as Victoria and Working Women magazines also are referred to travel agents, she said.

Of the Bermuda program, Goldsmith said, "I think the island is a perfect mother-daughter destination." She cited the temperate weather, the scenery, the waters and British efficiency as factors suited to older mothers. Groups are limited to 20 to 24 mothers and daughters, "which is just the right size for forming friendships," Goldsmith said.
