Another survey

A recently released study suggests that more than 50% of the nation's business travelers believe that Web conferencing will reduce business travel by 20% in the next few years.

How many times has this survey been taken? Meeting planners have been quaking in their boots for the last decade, waiting for video-conferencing and on-line meetings to suddenly render their services superfluous.

In all the years I've been working in a corporate environment I have never "attended" an on-line meeting, nor have I ever participated in a video conference -- save those staged by video-conferencing companies trying to sell their products.

Here's what gets me: Conference calls have been a staple of the business world for a long time now. Nobody views that technology as a threat to the travel industry. Of course not. It's just like having your little brother pick up the extension phone while you're talking to your girlfriend. You grew up with it.

But add the word "Internet" to the mix and suddenly everybody trembles. As for this survey, like all the rest of them, I'll believe it when I see it.
