The Crossroads Travel Industry Employee of the Century award goes
to Jerzy Chichaky, a Polish motorcoach driver who apparently
doesn't know the meaning of the word "quit."
Our hero was driving a Polish soccer club along a roadway near
Barcelona, Spain, when his bus blew a piston. The tour operator
sent a second coach to pick up the 55 team members, but Chichaky
was left to wait for the part needed to fix the vehicle.
He waited for 18 days. For 18 days this guy camped out, guarding
his bus, living on a local baker's daily offerings of bread and
buns. Relief showed up on Friday in the form of a colleague bearing
the missing part.
The fact that Chichaky does not speak Spanish or any language
other than Polish may have curtailed his options somewhat in this
situation. But still, you've got to admire a guy who will sleep
rough for nearly three weeks just to wait for a spare part to fix a
10-year-old tour bus.
At least, I think you've got to admire him.
