Child's play

The Mississippi Gaming Commission approved a ruling that would prohibit unsupervised children under the age of 16 from entering casinos. How sad that they would want to deny these children such a valuable rite of passage. Why, I wouldn't be the man I am today had I not spent those hazy, carefree days of youth whiling away the hours in casinos, savoring the second-hand smoke, talking strangers of legal gambling age into putting my allowance on even and letting it ride... I'm getting weepy...

As elaborate schemes continue to be hatched, geared toward finding new revenue streams and opportunities for travel agents, ASTA president Joseph Galloway did a magnificent job of breaking down the issue in simple, poignant terms. In an interview marking his first month in office, Galloway said that selling is "the business we are in, [and] that's the main way to support" suppliers -- as opposed to, say, buying their stock as part of a long-range effort to control them. The moral: There's a lot of emphasis on "thinking outside the box" these days, but maybe we should stop to consider whether all the possibilities inside the box have been adequately explored.
