Discounts flood the market as Mexico eyes recovery

*logoTravel discounts to Mexico might not get better than this. As the county's tourism industry battles to recover from the severe impact of the swine flu outbreak, people considering a visit can choose from an unprecedented number of steeply discounted resorts and hotels throughout the country, including many that would otherwise be out of a typical tourist's price range.

The discounts, which followed the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's lifting of its advisory against nonessential travel, appear to be working: Over the Memorial Day weekend, hotel occupancy along Cancun's Hotel Zone rose to 43%, according to the Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau, although that's still well below the 85% occupancy posted during the same week in 2008.

Rosewood Hotels & Resorts is offering a $200 resort credit, daily breakfast for two and free room upgrades at its two luxury properties in Mexico: the Rosewood Mayakoba on the Riviera Maya and Las Ventanas al Paraiso in Los Cabos.

At Las Ventanas, the Rosewood Escapes nightly rate starts at $515 a night through Oct. 14. If that still sounds steep, consider that the $515 can get you into a $750 a night suite with the free upgrade. At the Rosewood Mayakoba, the reduced rate starts at $395 a night through Sept. 30. Visit www.rosewoodescapes.com or call (888) 767-3966.

The popular Maya Tulum Wellness Retreat & Spa is offering a discounted, seven-night Mind, Body & Spirit package for $1,368 per person through October. The package includes three meals a day, daily yoga sessions and nature hikes and spa treatments. Visit www.mayatulum.com.

Velas Resorts is offering a double suite upgrade at its three resorts in the Riviera Maya, Riviera Nayarit and Puerto Vallarta as part of its Welcome Back to Mexico promotion. Room rates start at $190 a night per person, double, at the Velas Vallarta Suite Resort (a savings of $230 a night per person) and $300 a night at the Grand Velas All-Suite & Spa resorts in the Riviera Maya and Riviera Nayarit (a savings of $220 per person per night and $260 per person per night, respectively). In addition, children up to 16 years old stay and eat for free at all three resorts.

The package is valid May 25 to Sept. 30. Call (888) 210-9591 or visit www.velasresorts.com.
