Pearl Harbor's Battleship Missouri Monument is offering visitors the chance to tour the great ship accompanied by an Apple iPod tour guide.
"We've readied a fleet of new iPod Touch units loaded with an unprecedented amount of video footage, audio recordings and veteran interviews so that our visitors have the option of walking and experiencing the Battleship Missouri at their own pace without missing out on any part of her history," said Michael Carr, the memorial's president and COO. "The Guide2Go tour is a historical piece in its own right, telling a story that spans more than five decades and featuring spectacular footage combined with narration and exclusive eyewitness accounts of men who served aboard the USS Missouri."
Trips to the "Mighty Mo" have been a visitor favorite on Oahu since the monument opened more than a decade ago. Thanks to the video component of the iPod Guide2Go units, however, all that intimidating, stationary gray metal takes on a new, active feel not before available during more traditional guided tours or with the monument's AcoustiGuide audio-only player.
With the iPod Guide2Go, 10 video content stops are spread throughout the ship, taking visitors back through World War II, the Korean War, right up to Operation Desert Storm. There is also a great deal of bonus material featuring details often overlooked by visitors on standard tours.
"Highlights include historical video and images of Japan's formal surrender aboard the USS Missouri on Sept. 2, 1945, as well as a kamikaze strike that set the Missouri's deck ablaze earlier in the war," Carr said. "But where the Guide2Go tour surpasses all predecessors is the depth to which it explores the Missouri's service after WWII."
Footage covering shore bombardments during both the Korean War and Desert Storm, along with crew interviews describing the events and what it was like to be there, accompanies an enthralling tale about how the ship was targeted by an Iraqi Silkworm missile that was eventually shot down by the HMS Gloucester.
"As remarkable as our guided tours are for the superb talent and knowledge of our guides, the Guide2Go offers a solitary, reflective experience that can be quite moving no matter what your previous familiarity with this magnificent battleship," Car added.
